Angels drop series to Astros with lopsided 9-1 defeat
LA TimesAs they’ve done before each of his starts this season, Angels manager Joe Maddon sought out two-way star Shohei Ohtani this week to ask what he wanted to do. The last pitcher to make multiple pitching starts in a season while also leading MLB in home runs was Boston’s Babe Ruth in 1919. “Right now, he feels fresh … I just think as we go, the important thing is to really stay on top of him in this, to permit him to get the most out of his abilities.” Maddon said that, just like in the spring, the pitching components of Ohtani’s two-way routine still take precedent between his starts. “So nothing’s changed at all.” The Angels are hoping that behind-the-scenes consistency can translate to the mound, where Ohtani’s command has fluctuated from one start, one inning, and sometimes even one batter to the next.
