NYC's Cleaning Up the Subway by Taking Away Trash Cans

Wired

New York City's got a new way to clean up its garbage-strewn, rat-infested subway stations: Get rid of the trash cans. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority relieved two subway stations of their trash cans almost four years ago. The vacuum trains designed to suck trash off the tracks are ineffective and often broken, and poor cleaning standards could "expos millions of commuters to track fires, train delays and rat infestation in hundreds of stations," the audit found. The MTA says it has no plans to eliminate trash cans systemwide, but if the pilot remains successful, New Yorkers should get used to doing things the responsible hiker way: If you pack it in, pack it out.
