Girl, 11, died after four doctors ‘failed to spot her appendicitis’
The TelegraphAn 11-year-old girl died after four doctors failed to spot her appendicitis, an inquest has ruled. The inquest heard Lacey had a type of the disease which, although it makes up about a third of acute cases, has different symptoms to “classic” appendicitis. Four doctors, at her GP surgery and in hospital, did not recognise Lacey’s symptoms and her condition was only diagnosed after an ultrasound, the inquest was told. Dr Julian Morris, the senior coroner for London inner south, has now issued a Prevention of Future Deaths Report highlighting the missed opportunities to spot Lacey’s appendicitis and the lack of “knowledge and awareness” doctors have around the form of the illness she had. Some of her symptoms appeared to be settling and it was determined she had been/was suffering from a viral illness.” Dr Morris added: “Three days later, she re-presented to another GP at the same practice who considered she had appendicitis; she was transferred to hospital.
