The Palaszczuk government has become engulfed in a political storm of its own making
ABCHow did we get here? The government was warned by the Australian Workers' Union of Employees Queensland that the youth detention system was "already struggling" when it introduced even stricter youth bail laws earlier this year after the death of Brisbane Mother Emma Lovell, who was killed in an alleged home invasion. Among them, Queensland Human Rights Commissioner Scott McDougall, who condemned the changes as "rash," and "alarming," and warned they would not reduce youth crime or make the community safer. Fronting media on Thursday, Youth Justice Minister Di Farmer said it wasn't a decision the government took "lightly," arguing it was necessary in light of advice from the state's solicitor-general. Criticised by crime victims and youth justice advocates alike, while also being accused by the LNP of "trashing" the parliamentary process by rushing through the amendments, avoiding public consultation.
