Research on ‘arecanut and human health’ takes a leap as Centre releases ₹9.9 crore to CPCRI
The HinduThe much anticipated ‘evidence based research on ‘arecanut and human health’ to be taken up by the Union government has taken a leap with the Centre releasing ₹9.9 crore to the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute at Kasaragod, Kerala, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, which will lead the multi-institutional research. Mr. Hebbar said that the research team will conduct studies to understand the effects of arecanut products on human health and explore alternative uses of arecanut and its by-products. It may be mentioned here that the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Bhagirath Choudhary told the Lok Sabha in December, 2024 that evidence based research on ‘arecanut and human health’ will be taken up to address the knowledge gap and provide conclusive evidence on the health effects of arecanut. The Minister said that certain research papers on the health effects of arecanut quoted by the World Health Organisation had methodological limitations leading to inconclusive reports.
