Sam would have done anything for a drink. He's on the fence about plans to make alcohol cheaper in the NT

Sam Goding spent years trying to hide how deep he was in the grips of a drink. At his worst, Sam put himself on the Northern Territory's banned drinker register, which blocks problem drinkers from buying alcohol from bottle shops, but he says in time that became "just another obstacle to overcome". In 2018, the Territory Labor government at the time introduced an alcohol "floor price" that banned sales below $1.30 per standard drink, specifically to target cheap wine. Alcohol Policy Minister Steve Edgington says the floor price is "not working", pointing to a 2022 review of the policy that found drinkers had shifted to other types of alcohol such as hard spirits, but ultimately recommended it should stay in place. People's Alcohol Action Coalition spokesperson John Boffa last week told ABC Radio Alice Springs there was "enormous evidence" showing the floor price was effective, but that evidence was contending with the power of lobby groups.
