Former construction watchdog boss calls for renewed organisation to clean up the sector
ABCA former construction watchdog boss has described alleged criminal infiltration of unions as a cancer that, if left untreated, would infect healthy parts of the building sector. John Lloyd, who led the controversial Australian Building and Construction Commission when it was established in 2005, said a new version of the watchdog was needed to clean up the industry and the embattled CFMEU. "They've been a difficult customer, an organisation that shows little regard for the law and it's been happening over many years, despite various attempts to rein that in," Mr Lloyd said of the union. Regardless of the pathway to reform – whether a royal commission, as called for by the opposition, or the government's review – Mr Lloyd said nothing would succeed without political will.
