The Real Lesson From Tim Walz’s 1995 DUI Arrest
SlateTim Walz’s career as a teacher was almost derailed in 1995, when he was arrested for driving drunk in Nebraska. Until Thursday, the Trump campaign didn’t seem particularly eager to make an issue of the arrest against Vice President Kamala Harris’ new running mate, perhaps noting that Walz’s past opponents had tried, and failed, to get voters to care about an old DUI. But attacks on Walz’s service record haven’t seemed to be landing and then a new story appeared on CNN on Thursday, saying that Walz’s campaign lied when questioned about the DUI in 2006. Trump supporters may disingenuously seek to equate Walz’s DUI story to Trump’s felony convictions and myriad of criminal indictments for attempting to overturn a free and fair democratic election. What’s important to remember from this episode is this: Walz’s misdemeanor conviction could easily have cost him his teaching career in 1996, and that would have been a real loss.
