Its 'cash cushion' is more than three times the size of that held by tech giant Apple and significantly larger than Microsoft and Google The size of its 'rainy day' fund may be explained by the church's belief that a period of war and hardship will precede The Second Coming of Jesus Christ Roger Clarke, CEO of the Mormon church's investment fund Ensign Peak until he retired in 2020, has previously said the Utah-based religion's cash reserves are being saved for the next economic disaster and expansion in poorer continents such as Africa Even some of its own followers have started questioning whether the church is hoarding money for nebulous purposes and have said they may stop paying their dues. Former Ensign Peak employee turned whistleblower David Nielsen has called for the IRS to investigate the fund over alleged misuse of funds, claiming they are not spending their money on charitable purposes as it is required to as part of its tax exempt status Christopher Waddell, one of three church leaders who oversees Ensign Peak's operations, has denied Nielsen's claims, calling them 'flat-out wrong' Its portfolio closely tracks the S&P 500, but with minor adjustments as its asset managers seek to outperform the index. In February, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission fined the Mormon church and Ensign Peak a total of $5million for using shell companies to 'obscure' the size of its investment portfolio. Christopher Waddell, one of three church bishops that oversees Ensign Peak, has said Nielsen's allegations are 'flat-out wrong'.
