Kolkata Municipal Corporation mandates Bengali language signboards for shops

India Today

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has made it compulsory for all commercial establishments in the city to display signboards in Bengali along with other languages. Municipal Secretary Swapan Kundu stated that the civic body is working with shop and business owners, including restaurants, to ensure that signboards feature names and details in Bengali alongside other languages. In October, TMC Councillor Biswarup Dey proposed during a KMC session that all public and private offices should include Bengali on their signboards alongside other languages. A similar initiative was announced by the KMC in 2007 under then-Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, requiring shop owners to include Bengali on signboards, but it was not successfully implemented.
