Govt may put online games in 28 per cent GST tax slab, council to discuss on June 28
India TodayA GST council is said to hold a meeting today, June 28, to discuss the appropriate tax slab for the online gaming industry. The panel had previously expressed its willingness to put online gaming companies that particularly offer games with stakes like rummy and poker in the 28 per cent tax slab, which may stun the growth of this emerging market. However, the GST council has expressed interest in levying 28 per cent GST on the gross gaming value, which is the total money deposited by users in the form of a prize pool. Citing Amrit Kiran Singh, adviser to the All India Gaming Federation, Livemint reports, "Applying GST on GGV will lead to an almost 900 per cent increase in taxes, which will kill the emerging gaming industry". Meanwhile, the GST council headed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state leaders will also discuss putting casinos and horse racing firms in the 28 per cent tax slab.
