Two tribal communities in Manipur to work towards reducing tensions
The HinduA day after the imposition of restrictions following clashes between the Hmar and Zomi people in Manipur, leaders of the two communities on Tuesday agreed to work together to restore peace in Churachandpur district of the State. The organisations said the assault on Richard Hmar, the general secretary of Hmar Inpui and a member of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, was being settled according to local customary laws and practices. The Churachandpur incident happened amid efforts to restore peace in Manipur after Nongthombam Biren Singh resigned as the Chief Minister and the Centre imposed President’s Rule putting the 60-member State Assembly in suspended animation since February 13. Protest over missing man Scores of people in Manipur’s Imphal Valley organised a sit-in protest and marched to the Chief Secretary’s office to submit a memorandum, urging the authorities to locate 20-year-old Luwangthem Mukesh.
