MLS commissioner Don Garber discusses expansion, Apple TV deal and more in exclusive interview

As Don Garber enters his 23rd year as the commissioner of Major League Soccer, the league is at a pivotal moment in its history. Nashville SC CEO Ian Ayre once called the idea of MLS owners voting for promotion and relegation akin to “turkeys voting for thanksgiving.” “This is the ‘never say never’ thing,” said Garber. “They don’t have to build stadiums on their own dime and then, if they don’t win, all of a sudden they have to play in another league,” said Garber. “I’ve been in this job a long time, and I’m going to be in it a while longer,” said Garber, who has served as MLS’ commissioner since 1999. “With MLS Next Pro, we’re building a third division in our country,” said Garber.
