
‘Food-borne diseases a challenge ’
The HinduAll stakeholders, from farmer, vendor, cook, to consumer, have a key role in ensuring the safety of food, a seminar organised by the district unit of the Indian Medical Association in connection with the World Health Day has observed. Presenting a paper on ‘food-borne infections’ on the occasion, Associate Professor of Medicine, Government Medical College, Kozhikode, R. Chandni, said that food-borne diseases were a serious public challenge for all countries. Quoting from the World health Organisation’s data Dr. Chandni said that there were about 200 diseases spread through food and around 20 lakh people across the globe fall sick by food-related infections every year. District Food Safety Officer Eliyamma, who spoke on the legal aspects of food safety on the occasion, said that each stakeholder should take responsibility for ensuring the safety of food from farm to the plate. Farm to plate An exhibition based on the theme ‘Food Safety—from Farm to Plate’ was also organised by the Health and Family Welfare Training Centre at Malaparamba in the city on Tuesday.
