Madhu Yaskhi Goud files PIL to stop work on Qutb Shahi funerary complex
The HinduFormer Congress MP Madhu Yaskhi Goud has filed a PIL in the Telangana High Court calling for termination of the contract with Aga Khan Trust for Culture for conservation of the Qutb Shahi Tombs Complex. The PIL labels the decade-long effort as “catastrophic failure of the AKTC in conserving the Qutb Shahi Tombs, a UNESCO-recognised heritage structure of Hyderabad.” It alleges that “despite allocating ₹100 crore, AKTC has utterly failed to conserve these seven historical tombs.” Ironically, the government’s Department of Archaeology and Museums has not spent any money on the conservation effort. The conservation effort of AKTC has won global plaudits, including a Distinction of Merit for the restoration of stepwells inside the Qutb Shahi Tombs Complex at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2022. The AKTC, which has restored the Sundar Nursery and Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, has had the backing of the German Consulate, the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, Tata Trusts and a host of other organisations for its conservation effort in the Qutb Shahi complex.
