Mawson in Antarctica and his hut in Hobart
ABCRobyn Williams: Well, last week we looked back to a British icon, Sir Christopher Wren from 400 years ago, and this week one of our own, Sir Douglas Mawson, now featured in a new book. Joanna Grochowicz: One of the challenges about writing about these polar expeditions is the pacing, because you have long stretches of time where nothing at all happens, and then you have these episodes that are crucial to the story, to the character development, and that's certainly the case with the story about Mawson because the first half of the book is really talking about their everyday life, how they're surviving in these terribly challenging conditions, how the group of 18 men are managing to get along in a very small space. Robyn Williams: Have you been to Mawson's hut in Hobart? Robyn Williams: Sophia Minter, studying at the University of Tasmania and waiting to welcome you to the replica of Mawson's hut, out there by the waterfront in the middle of gorgeous scientific Hobart.
