Swachh Bharat reality: A death every third day in gutter
India TodayOne sanitation worker die every third day in the country, according to data collected by a top NGO which works for the rights of sanitation workers. The data by NGO Safai Karmachari Andolan suggests that 221 sanitation workers have died since January 2017. The Narendra Modi government is spending thousands of crores to build toilets under its flagship Swachh Bharat Mission scheme but has it done enough to ensure safety of sanitation workers? Manhar Bhai Zala, chairman of the commission, alleges that Delhi L-G Anil Baijal and CM Kejriwal had assured that safety measures for sanitation workers would be in place during a meeting last year. Rajendra Pal Gautam, Minister of Social Welfare-SC/ST in the Kejriwal government told India Today, "The Jal Board has been given the job for sanitation but people don't contact it before calling workers.
