Row erupts over RSS leader Joshi’s ‘Mumbai doesn’t have a single language’ remark
A political spat broke out over language in Maharashtra this week, triggered by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Suresh Bhaiya Ji Joshi’s statements claiming that “Marathi is not the language of Mumbai”, and that those coming to Maharashtra’s capital city “do not have to learn or understand Marathi”. Marathi is the language of Maharashtra and Marathi is also a language… pic.twitter.com/i62Kc24PNu — Press Trust of India March 6, 2025 Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut slammed Mr. Joshi for speaking “against” Marathi. “The BJP’s policymaker and RSS leader, respected Bhaiyyaji Joshi, came to Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, yesterday, and said that Marathi isn’t the language of the capital. Still I wish to clarify that Marathi is the language of Mumbai and Maharashtra and all living here must learn Marathi,” Mr. Joshi said.
