Kent Nishimura/Getty Images House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday said the House will vote on Republicans’ budget blueprint “as early as today,” as leadership works to secure votes with a thin margin — but he remained noncommittal in a sign he still doesn’t have the votes needed to pass the bill. He pushed back on the assertion from House GOP Rep. Thomas Massie, who is a “no,” that the bill would worsen the deficit, arguing that “the budget resolution itself doesn’t do any of that.” Johnson also said that House Republican appropriators and their Democratic counterparts have not yet reached an agreement on an appropriations bill to fund the government, but that House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole told the GOP conference that they “may be getting close to a number.” Trying to get support: Meanwhile, House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith urged GOP lawmakers on the fence about the House’s plan to advance President Donald Trump’s sweeping legislative agenda to fall in line if they want to see substantial spending cuts. Four House Republicans have said they will vote against the House’s budget blueprint if Johnson brings it to the floor on Tuesday, with at least a dozen more expressing concerns with the plan. He told CNN that the Senate’s narrower strategy to pass Trump’s agenda, which begins with a border and defense funding bill and saves tax reform for a second bill, “won’t ever have the votes” to pass the House.
