Michael Murphy's departure puts second apology to NT Aboriginal people in doubt

It was more than an apology for past injustices committed against Aboriginal people by Northern Territory Police. Commissioner Murphy said although the NT Police Force had aimed to work effectively with Aboriginal people over its 154 years of policing, "we acknowledge … we have made mistakes". A long-running coronial inquest into the fatal police shooting of a young Aboriginal man in Yuendumu in 2019 was the catalyst for Commissioner Murphy's promised apology. Pushback over original apology Commissioner Murphy's first apology at Garma did not go down well with some members of the NT Police Force and he later faced pushback from the union. NT Police Association president Nathan Finn said the apology "frustrated" some officers who live and work in remote communities.
