As the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and being in a constitutional position, it’s not appropriate for me to comment on a law passed by the Parliament of India, but as a revolutionary and participant of the Assam agitation, I believe that the fear and misunderstanding caused by the Bill is not negligible. Anticipating that the implementation of the Bill will cause unrest among different tribal and linguistic groups of Assam, I, in last January when the Lok Sabha had adopted the Bill on 9 January 2019, had expressed in a statement that as a citizen and bipartisan observer that anything that will cause unrest and division among the citizens of Assam, particularly the indigenous people, is not something that my conscience allows me to support.
