Saving Kaleshwaram Barrages to Be Delayed Further

Hyderabad: It is becoming increasingly clear that the National Dam Safety Authority is nowhere near to completing its much-awaited report to the state government on possible solutions to the problems at Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages of the Kaleshwaram project. This has become evident with the Union ministry of jal shakti writing yet another letter to the Telangana irrigation department saying that the NDSA expert committee constituted specifically to address the problems at Kaleshwaram barrages, was still waiting for reports of several technical test reports at the three barrages. In a letter to the secretary of the irrigation department, the NDSA’s policy and research wing director Ajay Kumar Sinha has said that the expert committee “has expressed concerns regarding the non-submission of inputs sought from the irrigation and CAD department. The delay in providing these inputs is likely to result in a corresponding delay in the submission of the committee's final report.” Sinha’s letter to the state government followed a letter from the committee to the NDSA chairman on November 29, saying the “It is requested that NDSA may impress upon the secretary, I&CAD dept., government of Telangana to expeditiously submit all the remaining inputs to the committee without further delay.” The NDSA was to submit its final report by December 31 but the Jal Shakti ministry letter sent to the state irrigation department on December 2 has now made it clear that the report will take much longer to come to the state.
