A message to China? Quad foreign ministers pledge to uphold free & open Indo-Pacific, rule of law
FirstpostIn the first such meeting in US President Donald Trump’s second term, the foreign ministers of Quad member-states United States, India, Japan, and Australia met on the sidelines of the inauguration at Washington DC Putting a united stand on the Indo-Pacific region, the Quad foreign ministers met on the sidelines of the inauguration of US President Donald Trump at Washington DC and pledged to keep the region a top priority. In an apparent message to China, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong pledged the group’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific “where the rule of law, democratic values, sovereignty, and territorial integrity are upheld and defended”. We also strongly oppose any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion.” Highlighting that Quad goes much beyond checking China’s muscle-flexing and engages with the region on a wide range of issues, the foreign ministers said that their countries are “committed to strengthening regional maritime, economic, and technology security in the face of increasing threats, as well as promoting reliable and resilient supply chains.” The Quad foreign ministers’ meet is the first meeting that Rubio attended as the Secretary of State. Today’s meeting of Quad Foreign Ministers, so early in the Trump Administration’s term, demonstrates our shared determination to work together for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
