Shropshire maternity scandal: ‘The midwife was shouting at me as I said, I can’t do this’
The TelegraphKamaljit Uppal had begged doctors to deliver her breech baby by caesarean section - but her pleas were ignored until her son was protruding from her body, struggling to breathe. Her story is one of the harrowing cases which emerged during the biggest review of maternity services in NHS history, which may change the way pregnancies across England are managed for years to come. The long-awaited Ockenden Report, which has been three years in the making, has detailed shocking failures in maternity care at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. Women left screaming in pain for hours, being told they were "lazy" for wanting a caesarean, having their excruciating pain dismissed as "nothing", and being made to feel "pathetic" were some of the unimaginably traumatic experiences recounted. Others told of repeated failures by staff to recognise mothers and babies in deteriorating conditions, including one mother whose baby died because staff were "too busy" to monitor her during labour.
