How UGC aims to revamp hiring of V-Cs, professors in universities, colleges
The University Grants Commission has unveiled a bold new vision for faculty recruitment and promotion in India, with its draft regulations for 2025 promising to shake up the status quo and usher in a new era of academic excellence. The proposed changes aim to make faculty appointments and promotions more flexible, inclusive and qualitative, reflecting the evolving needs of a rapidly transforming higher education landscape. This approach reduces academic contributions to mere numerical metrics, discouraging potential applicants from pursuing faculty positions. To address this, HEIs need greater autonomy in selecting and promoting faculty, who can embrace innovative teaching methods, integrate technology, foster experiential learning, and drive transformative changes in the education system, says Kumar. For faculty promotions, the draft regulations propose a robust framework emphasising contributions beyond traditional research publications.
