WA shark attack: Western Australia rejects call for cull after fatal mauling near Esperance

ABC

The McGowan Government has rejected Federal Government suggestions of a shark cull, but left the door open to the potential use of drum lines. Federal Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg told a WA newspaper he would "welcome" proposals from the State Government including culling, new drum line technology and shark barriers. Mr Kelly said the previous Barnett government's attempts to make WA's coastline safer by deploying a drum line when there was the threat of a shark, or deploying it directly after an attack, were not successful. "The key part of the previous government's policy was automatically deploying drum lines after an attack," Mr Kelly said.
