Al Jazeera

Home to more than 80,000 Syrians who fled the war, Jordan’s Zaatari refugee camp marks 10 years since opening. Thursday marks 10 years since the United Nations’ Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan was opened to accommodate Syrians fleeing the war. Located in the desert of northern Jordan, about 12km from the border with Syria, the Zaatari camp, which is home to more than 80,000 people, is the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world. Five countries – Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Germany and Iraq – hosted 90 percent of the 6.76 million Syrian refugees around the world as of July 2021.
