J&K govt. to form panel after chapter on Muslim saint dropped from syllabus
The HinduThe Jammu & Kashmir government will form a committee to look into the Union Territory’s school syllabus following an uproar after a chapter on the popular Muslim saint Sheikh Noor-U-Din Wali was removed from the Class 9 English textbook. In an oblique reference to the criticism of former mayor Junaid Azim Mattu over the issue, the Minister said, “It was unfortunate to see those people raking up the issue who remained silent when these changes were being enforced on the syllabus last year.” J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while commenting on the issue, said, “There will be no deletion of the chapter. The matter has already been taken up by Sakina Itoo sahiba as soon as this was brought to the attention of the government.” Officials said non-local experts were engaged from different States by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration last year to draft books for schools in J&K “without consulting local academicians and subject experts”. JKPC president Sajad Lone termed the J&K Board of School Education move as “pure cultural terrorism” and “an assault on our culture and ethos”.
