Crop lodging due to unseasonal rains affects paddy farmers in Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam

Unseasonal rain on January 18 and 19 has caused lodging of the samba paddy crop across Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam districts, leaving farmers in distress. In Mayiladuthurai, 27,000 hectares of paddy fields were reportedly affected due to crop lodging out of its 69,000 hectares total samba, while Nagapattinam reported crop lodging across 9,712 hectares of its 62,932 hectares of samba cultivation. In Nagapattinam district, the unseasonal rain has impacted the samba paddy crop, leading to widespread crop lodging. Speaking to The Hindu, S. Rains cause heavy damage to crops in Srikakulam district

Natural calamities continued to haunt Srikakulam district where crops got damaged heavily with unabated rains for the last few days. Rain water entered houses in Sompeta and Kanchili areas, causing many troubles to residents. Furniture got damaged in several offices including MPDOs office in Sompeta. Mandasa received 171.4 mm and Kanchili got 171.2 mm rainfall till Wednesday morning.

Heavy rains triggered by the depression in Bay of Bengal lashed Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts on Tuesday.
