Puducherry issues order for shops to display names in Tamil amid language row

India Today

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy announced on Tuesday that the government would issue circulars mandating all shops and establishments to display their names in Tamil. “Strict instructions will be issued through the circular, ensuring that shop owners display Tamil versions of their establishment names on signboards,” Rangasamy stated. Nehru emphasised that there should be no leniency in enforcing the directive and urged the government to issue clear and firm guidelines to ensure the Tamil language is honoured. This directive comes amid ongoing language disputes in South India, particularly concerning the National Education Policy’s three-language formula, which has been perceived by some states as an attempt to impose Hindi.
