ASEAN-India Summit 2023: How two civilisational partners are strengthening cooperation in a transformative era

In the post-pandemic era, India-ASEAN relationship has reached an unprecedented high, with bilateral trade surging from just US$ 9 billion during their inaugural summit in 2002 to an anticipated milestone of over US$ 150 billion in 2023 From 6 to 7 September, 2023, Indonesia hosted the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta City, which included the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit. During the 20th ASEAN-India Summit in Jakarta, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 12-point proposal to strengthen strategic relations between India and ASEAN. He also stressed the need to raise issues relevant to the Global South in multilateral forums, underlining India’s commitment to a fair and just global order Moreover, ASEAN and India are not only neighbours with both land and maritime boundaries but also hold deep civilisational ties collectively wield remarkable influence, accounting for 7 per cent of global GDP and over 26 per cent of the world’s population. Modi’s comments on the South China Sea issue also coincided with heightened global attention to China’s territorial claims in the region, particularly as depicted in its latest “standard map of China”.
