Is the Premier League the real European Super League?
New York TimesTen years ago, Sir Alex Ferguson walked out of a press conference after a journalist asked him a question he did not like. “Based on the average Euro Club Index of their top 18 clubs, the Premier League and La Liga have usually been the top two leagues in Europe since we launched it in 2007,” says Gleave. “The Premier League would still have a greater share of the world’s top 100 players than the hypothetical Continental Super League,” says Chaudhuri. “According to our model, 42 of the world’s top 100 players currently play in the Premier League, compared to 40 at the Continental Super League clubs. In other words, the Premier League would hold its own when it came to the quality of players on the pitch.” If these leagues were to play each other in a Ryder Cup format, the best team in England versus the best on the continent, followed by the second-best versus the second-best and so on, with a point for a win and half for a draw, the Premier League’s top three — City, Liverpool and Chelsea — would beat their counterparts — Bayern, Real and Inter, giving the English an early 3-0 lead.
