Aussie plane ticket prices hit a whopping 15-year high with some more than TRIPLING

Fares on domestic airlines have hit a whopping 15-year high with some popular routes costing three times more than they did in 2019. The average airfare is 27 per cent higher than it was three years ago before the pandemic took hold, the ACCC's latest Airline Competition in Australia report reveals. Flights from Sydney to Perth and Ayers Rock have risen significantly in the past three years Other major city routes saw significant price hikes too, with Adelaide to Gold Coast up 156 per cent from $374 to $958, Melbourne to Perth up 146 per cent from $439 to $1,078 and Perth to Sydney rising 143 per cent from $497 to $1,210. 'Airfares have risen due to strong demand for travel and constrained supply as airlines have scaled back their schedules in response to high jet fuel costs and operational challenges,' ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said. Jetstar, Qantas, Rex and Virgin Australia collectively cancelled 2.9 per cent of their domestic flights in October 2022, down from 6.4 per cent in July.
