Rare September soaking for all Australian states this week could break rain records and signal wet spring and summer
ABCA near-nationwide soaking will drench every Australian state and territory this week, including potential record heavy falls in the north-west tropics. Widespread rain events of any kind are extremely unusual in September, which on average is Australia's driest month, and the upcoming falls could be the start of a wet spring and summer as a potential La Niña emerges in the Pacific Ocean. Rain to impact all states and territories The first drops are already falling over northern Western Australia and will intensify on Sunday, then gradually spread across the interior to eastern states from Monday to Thursday. Despite parched catchments at the end of the northern dry season, the forecast rain has triggered flood watches for the western NT and north-east WA and depending on how the system develops next weekend, flooding across the Murray-Darling Basin or east coast can't be completely ruled out. By late winter and early spring, the bands are virtually non-existent as waters around Australia cool and the majority of tropical convection and rain has migrated to the northern hemisphere.
