IIIT Kottayam develops drones for tranquillising elephants in distress
As tranquillising distressed elephants, which often stray into human settlements on forest fringes, becomes an escalating challenge, IIIT Kottayam is taking technology to the skies for a safer solution. “Tranquillisation is carried out using advanced pneumatic technology, which operates through a wireless communication system,” explains Ragesh G.K., faculty in charge of DroneX Lab. “This wireless communication ensures real-time control and monitoring, allowing for efficient and safe deployment without the need for direct human intervention.” At present, the device can achieve a distance of 15 metres and administer one shot per flight. Besides Asthra V1, the Drone X Lab at IIIT Kottayam is engaged in various projects in the field of drone technology including developing unmanned underwater vehicles.
