Competition Commission slaps ₹1,338-crore penalty on Google for unfair practices
The HinduThe Competition Commission on October 20 imposed a penalty of ₹1,337.76 crore on Google for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem. In the release, the regulator said it has imposed a penalty of ₹1,337.76 crore on Google for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem apart from issuing the cease and desist order. Also, it has leveraged its dominant position in the app store market for Android OS to protect its position in online general search which violates the competition law. “Google has leveraged its dominant position in the app store market for Android OS to enter as well as protect its position in Online Video Hosting Platforms market through YouTube and thereby contravened provisions of Section 4 of the Act,” the release said.
