NASCAR free agency: What we’re hearing about Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, Front Row and more

When The Athletic last updated NASCAR free agency, Stewart-Haas Racing hadn’t named Josh Berry as Kevin Harvick’s replacement, Martin Truex Jr. and Aric Almirola were contemplating whether to retire, Front Row Motorsports was dealing with a logjam of drivers, and little else had been decided. “We’re working through some details, and it’s a complicated consideration because now he’s not just a driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, he’s also a team owner, and given that there has to be alignment for Toyota and Denny across both those considerations, just have some stuff that we’re working on, but we’ll get them sorted out.” All signs point to Denny Hamlin returning to JGR. “People have pulled the experience card, but it would be my fifth year in Trucks, and I don’t want to get further behind for when I do get in a Cup car,” Smith said. A resolution on Front Row’s 2024 Cup lineup is expected “soon.” That timeline is a departure from how the team typically operates, often waiting until the offseason to set its roster.
