Omicron worry: India's economic recovery could face disruption again, says UN
India TodayThe deadly wave of Delta variant-driven Covid infection claimed 240,000 lives between April and June last year and disrupted the economic recovery. “Similar episodes could take place in the near term,” the United Nation’s Economic forecast for India has stated, amid a rising number of Omicron infections in the country. However, India’s economic recovery is on a solid path, amid rapid vaccination progress, less stringent restrictions and still supportive fiscal and monetary stances, it added. Elaborating on South Asia’s economic recovery, the UN said it is gathering steam but remains fragile and is subject to downside risks. Achieving robust, sustained and inclusive growth will be critical in tackling the region’s recent rise in poverty and inequality, with the pandemic erasing years of progress on poverty reduction and pushing an estimated 30 million more people into extreme poverty in 2020, the UN said.
