Thousands will be arrested in crackdown on child marriage, says Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
India TodayOver the next one week, thousands of men in Assam who married underage girls will be arrested. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s announcement on Thursday was part of the government's campaign against child marriage, which he cited as the reason behind child pregnancy, which in turn was responsible for high maternal and infant mortality rates in Assam. In total, 4,004 cases have been registered in Assam against child marriage so far, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared on Thursday.
