Thousands will be arrested in crackdown on child marriage, says Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Over the next one week, thousands of men in Assam who married underage girls will be arrested. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s announcement on Thursday was part of the government's campaign against child marriage, which he cited as the reason behind child pregnancy, which in turn was responsible for high maternal and infant mortality rates in Assam. In total, 4,004 cases have been registered in Assam against child marriage so far, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared on Thursday. Here’s a look at child marriage data in districts of Assam: 50.8 per cent in Dhubri 44 per cent in South Salmara 42 per cent in Darrang 42 per cent in Nagaon 41 per cent in Goalpara 41 per cent in Bongaigoan 40 per cent in Barpeta 39 per cent in Morigain 15 per cent in Dima Hasao The data further showed that a high percentage of married girls gave birth before they reached the legal age of 18.
