A population surge partly led to higher rents and house prices — will a fall in net migration fix it?

It is not surprising that a population surge that's contributing to higher rents and house prices, and that's putting home ownership out of reach for many, has created heated political debate in this country about the level of immigration. Fewer temporary migrants will be able to gain permanent residency The government listed eight "key actions" in its migration strategy unveiled on Monday, which drew on the key findings of Martin Parkinson's migration review, and the 483 public submissions it received. The government will also "explore a reformed points test for permanent skilled migration", and a new "talent and innovation visa" for migrants who can drive growth in sectors of national importance". Mr Wiltshire says, overall, the government's migration strategy is now better focused on "getting high-skilled people here, making it easy for them to stay and get a permanent visa". He says the government's proposed new talent and innovation visa "could be significant in getting really, really talented entrepreneurs to move to Australia".
