India TodayThe weekly number of Covid-19 cases in the world was recorded at 21 million, which is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic. In the South-East Asia Region, the number of new cases increased for the third consecutive week, with over 2.3 million new cases reported this week, a 36 per cent increase as compared to the previous week. Denmark will remove virtually all Covid restrictions from Tuesday next despite record infections, the government is relying on its high vaccination rate to cope with the milder Omicron variant, an AFP report said. Despite its high rate of transmission, the Omicron variant is less severe than Delta, with shorter hospital stays, less need for intensive care and fewer deaths, according to a new US study. Though Omicron has led to record numbers of infections and hospitalizations, straining the US healthcare system, the percentage of hospitalized patients admitted to intensive care units was about 29% lower than during last winter's surge, as per the study published in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
