From Bofors to Rafale: Dubious defence deals that rocked India

India Today

The slogan "Chowkidar chor hai" echoes a similar one that was popular in the late 1980s -- "Gali gali mein shor hain, Rajiv Gandhi chor hain." Scorpene submarines: In 2005, India signed a deal with French defence major Thales to build Scorpene-class submarines. Barak missiles: In 2001, Tehelka magazine undertook a sting operation and exposed graft in defence deals; Barak missile deal with Israeli companies was one such. HDW submarines: Just after Bofors scam burst into India’political space, another defence scam came to light -- the $300 million purchase of HDW submarine deal. In 1987 CBI filed a first information report naming a former defence secretary, assorted bureaucrats and agents of HDW with allegations of 7 per cent commission paid to clinch the deal.
