COVID-19 lockdowns in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs have been lifted

The Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner has ended the lockdowns in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs but several restrictions will remain in place for the next seven days. Key points: The lockdowns in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs both ended at 1:00pm Rules including the wearing of masks will continue for the next week Markets, gyms and close contact sports are still not allowed and hospitality patrons must stay seated More than 140,000 people in Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area had been subject to stay-at-home orders from Sunday afternoon following a coronavirus outbreak at the Granites gold mine in the Tanami Desert. But in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs several restrictions will remain in place until 1:00pm on Friday next week including the following: Masks must be worn in public and at work where physical distancing from others is not possible Indoor exercise venues and markets will remain closed In hospitality venues patrons will need to be seated for anything that is not takeaway Gatherings at homes will be limited to 10 visitors, not including household members Yesterday, Mr Gunner flagged the possibility of extending the Greater Darwin lockdown beyond this afternoon after it emerged a miner, who later tested positive to COVID-19, allegedly defied self-isolation directions by visiting a small supermarket in the Darwin suburb of Stuart Park. All close contacts linked with exposure sites in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs must stay in isolation for 14 days even if they return a negative test.
