Budget Session 2025 Highlights: A look at PM Modi, President Murmu's speeches to key points in the Economic Survey

In a nod to the government’s Aatmanirbharta initiative in defence, President Murmu’s speech mentioned the commissioning of two indigenously built warships– INS Nilgiri and INS Surat– and one submarine– INS Vaghsheer– by the Indian Navy in one go earlier this month. “The country has taken several historic steps to protect the country’s borders and ensure internal security….The govt has also taken steps towards self-reliance in the defence sector. “India’s defence sector has grown significantly under ‘Make in India,’ with a strong push for indigenisation and exports. The Economic Survey highlights the need for greater private-sector participation, MSME growth, and a shift from component exports to full-scale defence platforms…The Economic Survey also stresses the importance of public-private partnerships, dedicated R&D funding, and boosting India’s shipbuilding and aerospace sectors to strengthen self-reliance and global competitiveness,” said Ashish Kansal, CEO of defence manufacturing firm SMPP.
