Setback for Punjab Congress as five party leaders join BJP in Amritsar
India TodayThe Congress received a major setback in Amritsar as five of its senior leaders, including Amritsar DCC president Bhagwant Pal Singh Sachar, joined the BJP on Sunday. Welcoming them into the party, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh said that a new wave has started in favour of the BJP and it would soon see "Congress-mukt" Punjab after the Assembly elections. Bhagwant Pal, who led the Congress leaders to abandon their parent party, has served three terms as president of the Amritsar DCC and as an executive member of the chief Khalsa Diwan. Others who have joined the BJP include Pardip Singh Bhullar, a former Amritsar District Congress Committee senior vice president and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee secretary, Rattan Singh Sohal, Paramjit Singh Randhawa, and Tajinder Pal Singh.
