Norovirus infection triggered diarrhoea outbreak at anganwadi in Kochi, says NIV report
The HinduAn outbreak of food poison-like symptoms, including diarrhoea, among students of the Kochi Corporation’s anganwadi at Ponnurunni East division leading to its temporary closure last December was not triggered by contaminated water but was caused by Norovirus, it has emerged. “Testing of water samples collected from the anganwadi showed that while it had to be treated before being used for drinking and cooking purposes, it didn’t account for the diarrhoea outbreak. While the anganwadi and its premises were found to be clean, the water stored in the overhead tank was found to be contaminated, leading to speculations that it caused the outbreak since that was being used for drinking and cooking purposes. Steps were also taken to deploy floating barriers to keep waste from floating into the part of the water body passing through the division,” said Dipin Dileep, councillor, Ponnurunni East.
