The women: What Vijay's Bigil can learn from Ajith's Nerkonda Paarvai

2019 is one of the very few years that gave us strong women characters in Tamil cinema. Nerkonda Paarvai, which is a remake of Hindi blockbuster Pink, addressed women's safety, consent, double standards in society, sexism and patriarchy. Vijay's character Michael heads a women's football team and tries to address several pressing issues such as body shaming, patriarchy and harassment, but within the contours of a commercial film. The women in Nerkonda Paarvai played by Shraddha Srinath, Abirami Venkatachalam and Andrea Tariang are flawed yet strong and independent. Despite a huge star like Ajith as the face of Nerkonda Paarvai, H Vinoth refrained from using his stardom to convey messages about women safety for the most part of the film.
