Grattan Institute calls for increased funding for 'dangerous disgrace' regional roads

Key points: A new report from the Grattan Institute has found roads across much of regional Australia are a "dangerous disgrace" The report calls on the federal government to isolate $1 billion for local road maintenance Residents who live on bad roads have called on the government to invest more in regional roads Oestreich Road is located on prime farmland at Wellcamp, just outside of Toowoomba in southern Queensland. Not keeping up In a statement, Australian Local Government Association president Linda Scott said the report's finding showed federal funding programs "weren't keeping up with soaring costs". "More funding for road maintenance will also mean safer roads and will help reduce our unacceptably high national road toll, especially in rural and regional areas," she said. 'Substantial commitments' Queensland's Transport Minister, Mark Bailey, said the state had one of the largest road networks in the country, and the state government had "put an enormous amount of resources" into maintaining the network.
