Columbia-Developed Competency Test for Community Health Workers to Be Implemented in India
Hindustan TimesA pioneering competency test designed to formalise the role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in India has been developed by Janhavi Mallaiah, program director at Columbia University's InTOuCH programme. The test, named 'SLAT' (Stroke Literacy Assessment Test), will assess the knowledge and skills of frontline health workers in Maharashtra, a country with a significant burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The collaboration between the Columbia Center for Community Health (CCCH) and the Ambuja Foundation aims to adapt and validate the SLAT for frontline health workers, with the first phase focusing on cultural adaptation and validation involving approximately 200 frontline health workers from three Maharashtra villages. The project is expected to improve the effectiveness of future training programs and professionalise the sector. The initiative also seeks to address the challenge of financial support for CHWs/ASHAs in India.
