Crossbench MPs call on prime minister to make pathway for asylum seekers stuck in 'limbo'

Crossbench MPs are calling on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Immigration Minister Tony Burke to create a "timely pathway to permanency" for thousands of asylum seekers in visa limbo. Human Rights Law Centre legal director Sanmati Verma, who has represented asylum seekers like Mr Yogalingam, welcomed the MPs' letter. Ms Verma said Mr Yogalingam's death was an "entirely foreseeable result of a deliberately cruel and punitive set of legal arrangements". Ms Verma said contrary to the term 'fast-track', Ms Verma the system "weaponised refugee status assessment procedures" and there had been a "disproportionately high refusal of applicants from Sri Lanka and Iran".
